Family Services

The Kent County Sheriff Department Family Services Unit investigates crimes involving abuse and neglect of children and the vulnerable adults, all juvenile crimes, domestic violence, stalking and violations of Personal Protection Orders.

Two detectives are assigned at the Children’s Assessment Center (CAC). These detectives are responsible for the investigation of all cases of sexual abuse involving children 16 years of age and younger. The CAC is a child and family friendly facility designed to address those special needs and situations for the victims involved in these cases. The CAC is set up to accomplish these particular needs including interviewing, medical examination and counseling. The detectives are assigned at the center to work in conjunction with caseworkers from Children’s Protective Services (CPS), as well as CAC counselors.

Two other detectives are assigned to investigate all allegations of physical abuse and neglect involving children and vulnerable adults. These investigators work closely with caseworkers from both Children’s Protective Services (CPS) and Adult Protective Services. This coordination and team work allows the investigation to be the most effective and efficient while causing the least possible stress for the victim and their family. In addition to this duty these detectives are also charged with investigating all crimes committed by juvenile offenders.

Two additional detectives are assigned to address domestic violence, stalking, and violations of Personal Protection Orders. Detectives assigned to this duty follow up on all domestic cases forwarded from the Road Patrol. Warrants are sought against abusive domestic partners for cases resulting in arrest at the scene, as well as those that are referred for prosecutorial review. The well being of the victim is of paramount concern and information about appropriate social agencies is made.
